TT FR 1309 25 CENT 5TH ISSUE FRACTIONAL "SHORT, THICK KEY" PCGS 65 PPQ GEM NEW
25 Cent 5th Issue Fractional with fr# 1309 showing signatures of Allison and Spinner. Graded 65 PPQ (premium paper quality) Gem New by PCGS. This is a Short, Thick Key variety, the key that is in the red seal. This short key Walker has plentiful margins, good centering and the paper quality to qualify for the gem grade. The obverse features the head of Rob J. Walker, Secretary of the Treasury, 1845. The Currency Act of April, 17th 1876, directed that all Fractional currency notes were to be redeemable with silver coin. This act also brought about a fifth issue of fractional paper currency that was not easy to fake. By the end of the Fifth Issue in early 1876, there were more than enough silver coins circulating to meet the everyday needs of the nation and paper fractionals more or less died out.
